Salary: $51,590 Annually

Job Summary: 

The Academic Advisor provides personalized academic advising to students, supporting their educational and career goals. This role includes monitoring academic progress, assisting students in creating plans for success and providing interventions for students who may be struggling. The Advisor works to enhance student retention and engagement by participating in campus activities, using data to identify at-risk students, and fostering academic success through proactive advising strategies.

Essential Functions: 

  1. Arrange meetings with and assist students not working within the bounds of student policies, including SAP, Student Conduct, and all other applicable policies.
  2. Utilize SAP data trends to identify students who may be struggling and provide early and targeted intervention to address potential issues.
  3. Advocates for students, while balancing the interests of the students and the College, maintaining the integrity of the College’s academic programs and policies.
  4. Ensures compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), including but not limited to training faculty and staff, and resolution of all special accommodations requests.
  5. Collaborate with faculty and other departments to ensure students receive accurate academic information and support throughout their programs.
  6. Assist in the planning and execution of student orientations, recognition events, and other college activities that promote student success.
  7. Participates in Sponsors' Meetings, prepared to provide information about students for sponsors.
  8. Assists with recruiting students, enrollment, campus tours, and other College activities as assigned.
  9. Assists with introduction, promotion, and management of the Southwest Technical College chapter of the National Technical Honor Society; and inducts students at graduation ceremonies.
  10. Collect and analyze data on student outcomes, engagement, and retention, reporting trends to faculty, staff, and administration as directed.
  11. Stay current on best practices in academic advising and retention strategies, and implement them to improve student outcomes.
  12. Performs related or other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or otherwise to balance the workload.

Qualifications:

To perform at a proficient level and to be fully qualified, a person would be expected to have:

  1. Education:  Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Education, Counseling, or a related field.
  2. Specialized Knowledge/Skills: Strong computer skills; advanced level user of PC, Internet, and MS Office suite.
    1. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
    2. Supportive approach to student guidance, especially when dealing with students with developmental, emotional, physical, or learning challenges.
    3. Ability to remain calm in any situation.
  3. Experience:  Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and supporting their academic success.
  4. Background Check:  Must be able to pass a background check.

Environmental Factors: 

Conventional Educational Environment. In some programs, employees may occasionally be exposed to cleaning chemicals and the hazards associated with their respective industry equipment.
