Program Details
The Exchange Teacher is sponsored on a J-1 visa, which allows the teacher to spend a maximum of three to five years as visiting faculty at a school in the US. The teacher is given a contract one year at a time and may be dismissed if they are unable to perform their duties. Once a teacher is selected by a school district, she/he is responsible for teaching full-time at the school. Employment follows the local laws and regulations. The teacher is expected to work in the same district/school for the duration of their participation in the program.
At the end of the assignment, the Exchange Teacher and her/his dependents are expected to return to their home country to share their newfound knowledge and experience. Section 212(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act requires that "J" exchange visitors who participate in J1 Visa programs must return to their country of nationality or last residence after completing their program in the United States and reside there physically for two years before they may become eligible to apply for an immigrant visa or any category of temporary worker nonimmigrant visa.
Approximate salary:
The approximate salary range is $43,000-$80,000 per year prior to taxes. Your salary will be based on your degrees and your attested K-12 experience. Each district has its own respective salary schedule and that information will be available at the time of your selection. The regulations only allow the experience to be credited after an individual has earned the U.S. equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
PLEASE NOTE: There are certain costs associated with the J1 Visa that are not charged by Webber's Ed. You will be advised of these costs in advance.
Approximate cost of living in the United States:
The typical monthly expenses for a family of 3 are:
1. Monthly Rent $750-$1,500 (depending on the area)
2. Food $500-$1,000
3. Utilities (i.e. telephone, electricity, cable, etc.) $100-$1,000
4. Car/transportation $250-$500
Total monthly expenses: $1,650-$4,000
Housing & Transportation:
The teacher, J-1 Visa provider and school district will work together to coordinate temporary housing for the Exchange Teacher prior to arrival but the J-1 provider is not allowed to secure housing on behalf of the teacher before they arrive. The J-1 provider will help the teacher find temporary housing until they find their permanent housing location, and will help the teacher find a permanent housing location once they arrive, but the J-1 provider will not finalize permanent housing arrangements before the teacher reaches the US. Host faculty roommates may offer room and board in exchange for a fee from the teacher. Exchange Teachers are welcome to establish their own housing or stay with friends, family and/or associates after arriving in the US.
Teachers are placed in a diverse range of geographic locations. They are assigned to public schools (funded by the local and federal government of the USA) which are located throughout urban, suburban and rural areas.
If you have a valid international driver’s license, plan to bring it with you when you come to the US since driving will be helpful for you to get around once you have established yourself in the US. If you do not know how to drive, we will assist in arranging transportation to and from school. You are responsible for this cost of transportation to and from school, which may include local public transportation, shared van service for groups of teachers, or another method.
J-2 visa sponsorship for dependents
Exchange Teachers may request sponsorship for their families through the J-2 visa. We require visiting teachers become acclimated to their jobs and communities prior to requesting sponsorship, which can take several months or as little as 60 days. Our J-1 visa provider or its partner will help sponsor a legal spouse and dependent children under 21 on J-2 visas. The US consulate retains the right to deny a J-2 visa.
Please note that the J1 visitor is responsible for covering the co-pays and premiums associated with insuring their dependents, and that dependents are required to be insured for their entire stay in the US.
Upon arrival, the sponsored spouse can apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)/Work Permit with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It can take from 2-6 months to receive the EAD, during which time the spouse is not allowed to work.
We do not have any influence on the decision-making process of the US consular official and cannot guarantee that all candidates will be issued a J-1 visa. The J-1 visa provider will help teachers with preparation for their visa appointment, but the visa issuance is ultimately up to the US consulate. If a teacher does not receive a visa, their security deposit will be refunded to them.
