Job Purposes::

Wright State University and Premier Health seek an accomplished and entrepreneurial leader with a demonstrated ability to grow and elevate academic health platforms in their missions of clinical care, research, and education to serve as the new Dean, Boonshoft School of Medicine, and Chief Academic Officer, Premier Health. This inspirational leader will join a broader, entrepreneurial, integrated enterprise at a historic moment, with the charge to develop programs as the core of a new academic health platform in partnership with Premier Health and be responsible for developing strategies to advance the clinical, research, and education, missions of a top medical school.

This critically important senior leadership position requires a dynamic individual with a comprehensive understanding of the school of medicine's missions and the numerous challenges facing academic health centers in today's research and clinical environment. Outstanding strategic communication and diplomacy skills are essential, and an ability to function well is vital. The Dean must be creative and decisive, but also build consensus, with demonstrated success in a highly matrixed, complex, multi-faceted academic medical environment.

The Dean and Chief Academic Officer will serve as a key leader in pursuing the shared goals of the affiliation which include:

  • Increasing the numbers of physicians in key specialties and improving the standing, scope, and delivery of specialty programs to reduce patient outmigration from the market and increase in-migration from throughout Ohio
  • Stabilizing and growing the physician workforce and developing a workforce pipeline for a future care delivery model
  • More effectively developing WSU's physician faculty and aligning those faculty members with Premier's hospitals, clinics, and other teaching sites
  • Expanding the BSOM and Premier Health research platform; offering access to advanced therapies and population health insights to improve regional health outcomes
  • Enhancing the reputation of WSU and BSOM to attract high quality students, faculty, and employees to achieve growth in southwest Ohio
  • Grow the size of BSOM's undergraduate and graduate medical education programs
  • Enhance WSU's ability to train students at a lower cost and increase the likelihood these individuals remain and work in the community after graduation
  • Enhance financial performance to drive investment in the clinical, research, education, and community benefit programs which collectively, will improve the health of people in southwest Ohio.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven record of successful strategic planning, developing long-range goals and implementation, managing a diverse, interprofessional team, and collaborating with stakeholders to achieve mutual goals.

In terms of the performance and personal competencies required for the position, we would highlight the following:

Education

Doctor of Medicine or equivalent with a distinguished record of visionary leadership, research/scholarly accomplishments, and excellence in academic administration.


Outstanding Reputation in Academic Medicine

Exceptional reputation as a physician-scholar/physician-scientist leader across all aspects of the school of medicine's missions of clinical care, research, and education. Significant accomplishments and credentials as an outstanding medical educator, researcher and/or skilled clinician is expected. Understanding of accreditation standards such as LCME and ACGME . Leadership and participation in one or more national or international academic, scientific, and/or medical societies with an ability to work within, and improve, a complex health system is preferred.


Administrative Leadership

Demonstrated success as a leader in roles of progressive scope and scale, which may include current or previous service as dean, associate dean, center director and/or department chair. Experience in setting and articulating a vision, executing a strategy, successfully directing recruitment, mentoring, philanthropic and diversity/equity/inclusion programs are all desired in the successful candidate.


Excellence Across Missions

Background appropriate to a leader in all three missions: clinical care, research, and education. An ability to integrate academics and clinical care using the health system as a learning laboratory for both quality improvement and research is highly desired.


Business and Financial Acumen

Prior experience overseeing finances and budgeting, successfully driving operational efficiency, and an understanding of the complex financial pressures facing medical schools and academic health systems is necessary. Specific understanding of the potential impact of value-based care on the mission of academic medicine is highly valued. Similarly, an understanding of the unique pressures of the current research funding environment is essential.


Mentorship and Development

Demonstrated commitment to and success in faculty mentorship and development, including department chairs, center directors, and senior administrative staff.

As Dean, the position requires bold vision for the future of academic medicine and offers numerous opportunities including development of the school as the cornerstone and academic core of an enhanced partnership with Premier Health. The Dean will drive innovation in education and research, as well as supporting innovation in the organization's clinical, business and strategic missions.

Highlighted Dean responsibilities

  • Oversee of all aspects of the academic mission
  • Maintain and enhance undergraduate, graduate, GME , and continuing medical education, including providing coordinated oversight of the curriculum and curricular change
  • Coordinate with the College of Health and other health professions schools on designing and delivering innovating programs, including increasing interprofessional education and collaboration
  • Oversee, develop, and foster interdisciplinary programs, basic research, clinical research, and translational research
  • Lead efforts to increase interprofessional education

As Chief Academic Officer ( CAO ), the position is responsible for driving the organization to achieve its mission of unparalleled quality, safety, service, and innovation via education and research. This senior leadership role provides executive oversight of academic and educational programs and initiatives within the healthcare system, providing leadership and direction to the organization, and ensuring overall success of the affiliation with BSOM .


Highlighted Chief Academic Officer responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Premier management team and participate on appropriate committees of Premier
  • Oversee development of GME program aims and goals to create training programs at Premier locations, while setting the overall expectations to facilitate an outstanding clinical learning experience and environment
  • Ensure that inpatient clerkships and outpatient rotations are optimized across Premier and its Affiliates
  • Coordinate and develop new rotational sites across Premier
  • Support the coordination and improvement of clinical research sites and the related resource requirements across the health system, BSOM , and related health professions, including nursing, pharmacists, and allied health professionals
  • Expand the development of health system science as part of core residency training
  • Recommend and establish the financial requirements and resources to be dedicated to GME , UME , clinical research, and innovation
  • Provide overall direction, management, and oversight of all academic functions in collaboration with other healthcare organizations (including but not limited to Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton VA Medical Center, and Dayton Children's Hospital)

Location: Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and Premier Health are located in Dayton, Ohio. Relocation to the region is required for this leadership role.
