Job Description

Bishop Montgomery High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory secondary school based out of 5430 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, California, United States.

We are seeking a compassionate, organized, and student-focused Guidance Counselor to support our high school students' academic, personal, and post-secondary success. The Guidance Counselor will play a pivotal role in fostering a positive school environment, guiding students through academic planning, and providing resources for college and career readiness. This role also involves offering social-emotional support and helping students navigate personal challenges that may affect their school performance.

Responsibilities

Academic Support:

  • Assist students with course selection and academic planning aligned with graduation requirements.

  • Monitor student progress and work with teachers, parents, and administrators to address academic concerns.

  • Identify students at risk of academic failure and develop intervention strategies.

College and Career Readiness:

  • Guide students through the college application process, including essays, applications, and financial aid (FAFSA, scholarships).

  • Coordinate college fairs, career days, and information sessions.

  • Provide resources for career exploration, technical programs, and military options.

Social-Emotional Support:

  • Offer individual and group counseling for students facing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges.

  • Address issues such as anxiety, bullying, family problems, and peer relationships.

  • Make referrals to external mental health professionals when appropriate.

Administrative and Collaborative Duties:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records.

  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, and school staff to support student success.

  • Serve on school leadership or intervention teams as needed.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education: Master's degree in School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or a related field.

  • Certification: Valid state certification or licensure as a School Counselor.

  • Experience: Minimum 1–3 years of counseling or teaching experience in an educational setting preferred.

  • Empathy and cultural sensitivity

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
