Job Description

About Symmetra Design

Symmetra Design is a transportation planning and traffic engineering consulting firm based in downtown Washington, DC. As a small, high-impact firm, we foster a collaborative and supportive work environment where every team member has a voice and the opportunity to work on diverse, meaningful projects.

Our name, derived from “Symmetry,” reflects our philosophy of seeking balanced, multimodal transportation solutions that serve all stakeholders. We are passionate about enhancing mobility and connectivity across urban, suburban, and regional contexts.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Traffic Engineer / Transportation Planner to join our team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to impactful transportation projects while gaining experience across various aspects of the business, including client interaction, marketing, and networking. If you’re eager to make a difference and grow in a flexible, forward-thinking environment, we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities

As a Traffic Engineer / Transportation Planner, you will:

  • Prepare transportation studies, including Traffic Impact Studies, Parking Studies, Safety Studies, and Transportation Management Plans.
  • Apply knowledge of multimodal assessments and solutions, including pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and micromobility infrastructure, to develop balanced transportation strategies.
  • Develop illustrative drawings, charts, and graphs for reports and presentations.
  • Conduct fieldwork and analyze transportation data.
  • Collaborate with clients, public agencies, and multidisciplinary teams to develop effective solutions.
  • Participate in client and agency meetings.
  • Stay up to date with local, state, and federal transportation standards and best practices.

Who We’re Looking For

If you have experience or an educational background in traffic engineering or transportation planning—and a passion for improving livability through transportation projects—we’d love to hear from you! At Symmetra Design, we value enthusiasm, problem-solving skills, and a willingness to learn just as much as technical expertise.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, or a related field.
  • 2-10 years of experience in traffic engineering or transportation planning.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with GIS or Adobe Illustrator.
  • Familiarity with traffic analysis tools such as Synchro, VISSIM, and CAD is a bonus.
  • Knowledge of multimodal transportation planning, including pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and micromobility solutions.
  • Knowledge of DDOT and MDOT design standards is beneficial.
  • EIT certification or AICP (or willingness to pursue) is encouraged.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • A collaborative, inclusive, and growth-oriented work environment.
  • Professional development and mentorship opportunities.
  • A flexible hybrid work setup with access to a downtown office for in-person collaboration.
  • The chance to work on innovative, impactful transportation projects that shape communities.

At Symmetra Design, we believe diversity of experience and perspective strengthens our team. If this opportunity excites you, we encourage you to apply at careers@symmetradesign.com.
